Doing Nothing

It is extremely like that if you are a mom, it’s been a while since you were “doing nothing.” May especially is a month of go, go, go. With all of the end of year parties and celebrations and ceremonies, we focus a lot on going and on doing. Certainly we should celebrate accomplishments and milestones! But, in the midst of all the going and doing, let’s sit with something this week:

There is nothing you can do to make God love you more, and there is nothing you can do to make God love you less.

See Yancy, Philip. What’s So Amazing About Grace. Zondervan 2002.

This is grace. Grace is more than this statement, but it is not less. Take some time this week to read these verses and dwell on the truth of God’s amazing love for us, which is completely independent of any award, achievement or accolade.

  • John 3:16 The ultimate demonstration of God’s love is the death of Jesus on our behalf.

  • Ephesians 2:8-9 We are saved by faith and not by works.

  • Galatians 3:24 We are justified by faith alone.

  • Romans 5:6 God died for us while we were still sinners—His grace and love for us is completely unmerited.

  • Romans 3:23 All have sinned, so if sin is a disqualification no one would qualify!

  • Romans 8:31-39 Nothing can separate us from the love of God. Not one thing!

There is nothing you can do to make God love you more, and nothing you can do to make him love you less! Let this truth bring you peace and hope this week.
