Worth It
If you have ever found yourself in the middle of home renovations, you know this mantra: it will be worth it! We are willing to endure all of the dust, the mess, the disruption, the disorganization, the hammering, the destruction because we believe that the value of the final product will meet or exceed the price required to get there. Of course, this applies to all types of life scenarios. For example, taking time to exercise is worth it because we feel better and it’s good for us. Setting an alarm to get up early for time alone with God is worth the missed sleep. We consciously and unconsciously ask this question regularly: is it worth it?
We also apply this to ourselves, and we also do this both consciously and unconsciously: what is my worth? Am I worth it?
Do you know? How do you measure your worth? How does God?
Paul wrote about our value in his letter to the Ephesians:
Every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realm has already been lavished upon us as a love gift from our wonderful heavenly Father, the Father of our Lord Jesus—all because he sees us wrapped into Christ. This is why we celebrate him with all our hearts! And in love he chose us before he laid the foundation of the universe! Because of his great love, he ordained us, so that we would be seen as holy in his eyes with an unstained innocence. For it was always in his perfect plan to adopt us as his delightful children, through our union with Jesus, the Anointed One, so that his tremendous love that cascades over us would glorify his grace—for the same love he has for the Beloved, Jesus, he has for us. And this unfolding plan brings him great pleasure! Since we are now joined to Christ, we have been given the treasures of redemption by his blood—the total cancellation of our sins—all because of the cascading riches of his grace. This superabundant grace is already powerfully working in us, releasing all forms of wisdom and practical understanding.
Ephesians 1:3-8 (The Passion Translation)
We may be tempted to measure our worth by our performance, by the opinions of others, or by the impact or influence we have on the world. But God says we are blessed, chosen, adopted, forgiven, loved and redeemed. Genesis 1:26-27 says we are made in the image of God. Psalm 139 speaks beautifully of how carefully God made each of us. And none of this has anything to do with anything we do. Rather, it’s all about God, how He made us, how He redeemed us, and how He loves us as His prized possession.
“You are worth it!” --God
God has intentionally weighed the costs and decided you are worth it before you were born, before you made the grades, made the team, got the degree, got the promotion, and regardless of how many followers you have. God set your value so high that He was willing to send Jesus here to show us His love and our value to Him.
It is our prayer that we each settle this question once and for all for ourselves, and then guide this next generation of girls to settle this foundational question as soon as possible. In fact, it’s the heart of the mission here at Relay Exchange:
Our mission is to equip women to lead girls to the truth of their redeemed identity in Christ, freeing them to pursue God, His plans, and His ways.
Knowing our worth sets us free. We pray you find this freedom today.
I run in the paths of your commands, for you have set my heart free.
Psalm 119:32.
