Time to Refuel

This month marks the true beginning of summer for many, and summer means a break from routine. It can deliver an opportunity for rest. Whether you choose a vacation or a stay-cation, we hope you have the chance to refuel because we all need it!

The need to refuel is clear from the very beginning in Genesis when God creates the world in six days and leaves a seventh day to rest. God didn’t need rest; he was setting an example for us. Later in Scripture we see this principle enforced with the nation of Israel as they gathered manna. Most days they gathered just enough for a single day (or it would rot). But before their Sabbath rest, they were able to gather enough for two days. The Bible is clear; we need rest.

It’s pretty easy to see the need for physical rest. What about spiritual rest? Right before Passion week, Jesus is trying to prepare his disciples for what is coming and he has an exchange with Peter:

“Simon, Simon, pay attention! Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. When you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

Luke 22:31-32 NET

Jesus believed there was a supernatural battle going on, and he believed it involved humans. Satan targets people: he targeted Peter and he targets us. This is the main reason for spiritual refueling: we are in a supernatural battle. When you apply that to the parenting context, we are in a supernatural battle for the hearts of our children. When in a battle, it is important to know what is at stake and who you are fighting. Your family has an enemy, and it’s not other people, or your husband, or your children.

Thankfully, Jesus covers us in prayer. And God calls us to refuel.

Jesus also says we are to use our battle scars to strengthen others. One of the ways to do this in parenting is to circle up with other moms–just like you are doing in your groups. Share stories. Be vulnerable. Celebrate victories.

This is part of refueling.

Without refueling, we can get weighed down, exhausted and distracted. Refueling allows us to refocus

One way you can refocus is to identify problem areas. What frazzles you? What throws you off? Be aware of it. What can you do to fill up? In contrast, what ignites a passion in you? What makes you feel alive? What gives you true rest?

What is one thing you can do this month to refuel and refocus?
